Queen Elizabeth's Girls' School

The High Street building (opposite Bedford Avenue) which was built in 1927 and replaced Russell House and Ashley House which were the first buildings of the school in 1888. (Information provided by Vivienne Bell, QE Girls archivist.)

Dining room, Queen Elizabeth's Girls' School

The Dining Room on Meadway was built in 1953 and was demolished to make way for the present building that incorporates another dining area, car park, and teaching block. (Information provided by Vivienne Bell, QE Girls archivist.)

The building directly behind was one of the first purpose-built for Queen Elizabeth's Girls' School: it was part of buildings that were started in 1895 and completed in 1909. Headmaster William Lattimer was Chairman of the Sports Committee and oversaw the activities on the Playing Fields of the Grammar School in Blenheim Road (today Stapylton Fields). They included races both for boys and girls and for soldiers, as well as Morris Dance performances.

The building on the cover of the programme labeled 'Barnet U.D. Council Offices' now serves as the Coroner's Court for the Northern District of Greater London (Barnet, Brent, Enfield, Haringey and Harrow). 29 Wood Street, Barnet, Herts, EN5 4BE

This series of photographs is thought to have been taken in the late 1960's and early 1970's. The image on the photo postcard (Item 021 - photo 2 of 3) is a detail from a photo which appeared in a local newspaper article dated 9th January, 1970, and was probably taken the previous summer. By the time this larger one was taken (1972?) the number of staff car parking spaces in front of the school had trebled, reflected from a 3-form to a 6-form entry.
