Takedown Policy

Queen Elizabeth’s School takes a ‘reasonable endeavours’ approach to finding rights-holders for material which we have digitised. This page outlines the circumstances under which we will remove online material from this website. All of our online collections are subject to this takedown policy.

The School holds a wealth of material relating to its 450-year history. We are committed to making this material freely available to alumni, researchers, and the wider community.

Before making digitised material available online, we carry out risk assessments to identify sensitive and/or personal data. We also endeavour to check the copyright status of material. Where feasible to do so, we will try to contact rights-holders to seek permission to make copyright material available online.

The size and variety of our collections, and the age of the individual works, present challenges to this process. We are not always able to identify and trace rights-holders for all material. In some cases, we may make material available online without consent in the interests of accessibility, where we believe doing so will not cause damage to third parties.

To reduce the risk to rights-holders, we make most online digitised material available under a non-commercial licence: Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial 4.0 International Licence

If we are contacted by a potential rights-holder who objects to the presence of something online, we will remove the material in question from our website until we have been able to assess the case.

Where material is removed for valid reasons of copyright, its removal will be considered as lasting until copyright in the material expires, or until the rights-holder agrees that the material can be reinstated. Where material is removed for valid reasons of Data Protection, its removal will be considered temporary and will be restored once its sensitivity is deemed to have subsided, at a date decided by an internal review panel at the School.
