Twentieth-Century History of QE Project

This project provides a history of the School during the twentieth century. It brings together photographs, documents, and ephemera. Material has been arranged into albums and folders: each album has a corresponding folder. The albums contain photographs, short documents, and extracts from longer documents. The accompanying folders contain full documents.

Apart from 1900-1929 (which is covered by one album and one accompanying folder) and the 1980s (which is covered by two of each), other decades are covered by a single album and one accompanying folder. The final decade covered is 2000-2009.

The following note was written by Rosemary Baldwin in May 2021, upon completion of the 1990s album and folder (the final pair to be completed):

The completion of this album in May, 2021 represents the culmination of a project which began in 2009.
It was the brainchild of Dr John Marincowitz, Headmaster 1999 – 2011, whose vision was to bring together the scattered photographic records of the School (and some documentary ones, also) from 1930 onwards, with the primary intent that visiting Old Elizabethans would find interest and enjoyment in browsing through them.
At my request, an additional album for the first three decades of the twentieth century was also acquired; there was an abundance of material for this period, and it also gave scope for the inclusion of the earliest pictorial records of the School.
The first album to be completed, shortly before Dr Marincowitz retired, was that for 2000-2009, covering the greater part of his tenure. The other albums were completed in chronological order.
I should like to acknowledge all those who supported, assisted with or contributed to the project:-

  • Dr Marincowitz, its “onlie begetter”;
  • his successor as Headmaster, Mr Neil Enright, for his continual support and encouragement;
  • Mrs Emi Aghdiran, former Business Secretary and later Deputy Head, who recruited me;
  • Mrs Di Mason, a pillar of the school for many years, whose preliminary work in sorting out items of archive and memorabilia provided a solid basis on which to build;
  • successive assistants to the Headmasters – Mrs Melanie Olivestone, Mrs Phillipa Flint, Mr Matthew Rose and Ms Nicola Weston, who were always ready with their help;
  • Mr Glynne Thomas, OE and former Head of English, who gave invaluable assistance in the identifying and dating of old photographs;
  • The volunteer staff of the Barnet Museum, who assisted my researches into the QE records held at Wood Street;
  • Mr Surya Bowyer, now Head of Library Services and Curator of Collections, for his help in completing the project.
  • Last but far from least, I owe heartfelt thanks to those two former ladies of the Print Room, Mrs Beatrice Rey and Mrs Bhavna Gohil, who spent countless hours providing photocopies and captions. Not only were they unfailingly helpful, efficient, and patient with my frequent revisions, but their interest in and enthusiasm for the whole project made an already enjoyable task even more so.
